Where the Labradoodle started

The Labradoodle has a more specific origin than most designer crosses. In 1989, a breeding manager at the Royal Guide Dogs Association of Australia crossed a Labrador Retriever with a Standard Poodle, aiming to combine the Labrador’s guide-dog temperament with a coat that shed less. The idea caught on far beyond its original purpose, and the Labradoodle became one of the most popular crossbreeds in the world.

Temperament

Both parent breeds were selected to work closely with people, and it shows. Labradoodles are typically friendly, enthusiastic, and highly trainable, with a strong wish to be involved in whatever the household is doing.

Labrador heritage brings sociability, a love of water, and a retrieving instinct. Poodle heritage brings intelligence and a slightly more sensitive, thoughtful streak. Most Labradoodles land somewhere in the middle: sociable enough to greet everyone, clever enough to need occupying.

They are not a breed for long days alone. Company is what they want most.

Coat types

Labradoodle coats fall roughly into three descriptions, and the difference matters a great deal for your weekly routine.

A hair coat is straighter and closer to the Labrador side, sheds more, and needs the least grooming. A fleece coat is soft and wavy, sheds little, and needs regular brushing. A wool coat is tightly curled, closest to the Poodle, sheds least of all, and needs the most work.

For fleece and wool coats, plan on brushing three or four times a week, working in sections down to the skin, plus professional grooming every six to eight weeks. The coat often changes texture as a puppy matures, so ask us what to expect and start handling paws, ears, and muzzle early.

Both parents carry drop ears. Check and dry them weekly, particularly after swimming, which most Labradoodles will do at every opportunity.

Exercise and training

A standard Labradoodle is a large, athletic dog and needs proper daily exercise: a long walk, a run, fetch, or swimming, plus mental work. Retrievers like having a task, and this cross is happiest with something to do.

Training is usually a pleasure. Both parents are near the top of the trainability rankings, and reward-based methods work extremely well. Focus early on loose-leash walking and calm greetings, because an enthusiastic dog of this size needs manners more than a small one does.

As a large-breed puppy, keep exercise low-impact while the dog is still growing, feed a large-breed puppy formula, and follow portion guidance rather than free-feeding.
