What a Designer Hybrid Is

A designer hybrid is a deliberate cross between two purebred lines, chosen for the combination rather than assembled by accident. A Goldendoodle takes a Golden Retriever and a Poodle; a Cavapoo takes a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle; a Morkie takes a Maltese and a Yorkshire Terrier. The point of the cross is to bring together traits families ask for again and again: a companionable temperament, a manageable adult size, and a coat that leaves less of itself on the sofa.

Poodle Crosses

The poodle side of the family is the largest group we carry. Goldendoodles, Labradoodles, Bernedoodles, Sheepadoodles, Cockapoos, Cavapoos, Maltipoos, Havapoos, Shihpoos, Yorkiepoos, Schnoodles, Whoodles, Aussiepoos and Newfypoos all appear here, and most of them come in more than one size — mini, micro and standard versions let you pick the same temperament at the scale your home can take. Poodle crosses generally carry wavy or curly coats that shed less around the house, in exchange for a standing grooming appointment every few weeks.

Crosses Beyond the Poodle

Not every hybrid involves a Poodle. The Morkie, Shorkie, Pomchi, Chiweenie, Cavachon, Havachon, Maltipom, Puggle, Frenchton, Teddy Bear and Pomsky each blend two other lines, usually to land on a specific size and personality. These crosses are popular with families who want a small companion dog with a bit more sturdiness than a single toy breed offers.

What to Expect From a Hybrid Litter

Here is the honest part. A cross draws from two gene pools, so littermates vary more than they would in a purebred litter — one puppy may take after the Poodle parent’s coat while its sister takes after the retriever’s. Coat texture, adult size and coloring can all land anywhere between the two parents. That variety is exactly why meeting the individual puppy matters more with a hybrid than with almost anything else.
