Mini and standard Sheepadoodles

The Sheepadoodle crosses an Old English Sheepdog with a Poodle. This page brings the sizes we carry together so you can weigh them against each other.

The Old English Sheepdog half

The Old English Sheepdog is a large British drover’s dog, used to move cattle and sheep to market rather than to herd them in the field. It is best known for two things: an enormous shaggy coat and a distinctly goofy, good-humored character.

That second quality is what most people are after in this cross. Old English Sheepdogs are clownish, sociable, and physically demonstrative, and they tend to lean on people rather than sit politely beside them. Crossed with the Poodle, you get a shaggy dog with a sense of humor and considerably more trainability.

The coat is the main commitment

Be clear-eyed about this before you choose. Both parent breeds carry a lot of hair, and the Sheepadoodle’s coat is usually thick, wavy to curly, and low-shedding. Low-shedding means the hair stays in the coat, and a coat this dense will mat under the surface where you cannot see it.

Brush three or four times a week, working in sections right down to the skin, and follow with a metal comb. Professional grooming every six to eight weeks. Mats form behind the ears, in the armpits, around the collar, and along the trousers.

Many owners keep a Sheepadoodle in a shorter clip, particularly in the Florida climate, and it makes the routine much more manageable. Start handling paws, ears, and face in week one so grooming is normal.

Keep the hair around the eyes trimmed; both parents grow enough of it to obscure the view.

Mini or standard

A standard Sheepadoodle is a large, strong dog with a real exercise requirement and a real need for leash manners taught early. Plan for the logistics: crate, car, food, grooming bills.

A mini Sheepadoodle keeps the character in a frame that fits more households. It is the practical option for smaller homes, though it is not a low-energy dog.

Adult size in a crossbreed is an estimate. Ask us about the specific puppy’s parents and expected range.

Energy and instinct

Both sizes want a good daily walk plus play and mental work. Poodle intelligence means training games, puzzle feeders, and new skills all land well.

Drover heritage can show up as bumping, leaning, and occasionally herding movement around the house. Redirect it early: reward calm around running children or pets, teach the dog to fetch a toy when it gets excited, and interrupt the pattern before it becomes a habit.

For standards, keep exercise low-impact while the puppy is still growing and feed a large-breed puppy formula.
