A big shaggy dog with a sense of humour

The Sheepadoodle crosses an Old English Sheepdog with a Poodle. The Old English Sheepdog is a drover — a big, shaggy, deceptively agile breed developed to move livestock and known for a distinctly clownish streak. The Standard Poodle behind the cross is a water retriever, tall and quick-thinking.

Between them they produce a large, thickly coated, playful dog that stays puppyish longer than most breeds and tends to be at the centre of whatever is going on in the house.

Grooming is the deciding factor

We would rather you heard this before you fall in love with the photograph. The Sheepadoodle coat is the biggest ongoing commitment in owning one, and it is the reason a lot of them end up clipped very short by their second year.

The coat is long, dense and inclined to hold its hair rather than drop it. On a dog this size that is a large surface area of hair that will mat if it is not combed to the skin, in lines, several times a week. The friction points do it first: behind the ears, under the collar, in the armpits, between the back legs and around the tail.

Add a professional groom on a regular schedule and budget for it properly. If that routine does not fit your life, the honest answer is to keep the coat in a short trim year-round, which is entirely legitimate and much kinder than letting it mat.

Herding leftovers

Drover breeds move things, and some Sheepadoodles inherit the impulse. It can show up as circling, nudging, or following movement across a room — a bike, a ball, someone running.

It is easy to work with if you get in early. Teach the dog that movement is a cue to check in with you rather than to follow it, and reward that reliably during the first year. It is much harder to unpick once a big dog has practised it for two.

Exercise, space and the growing year

Plan for a genuinely active dog. A long daily walk, plus games with rules — retrieve with a wait, find-the-toy, simple obedience — will keep a Sheepadoodle content. Mental work counts for as much as distance; both parent breeds are thinkers.

While the puppy is growing, most large-breed owners keep the impact low: free play on grass rather than long runs on pavement, and stairs kept down early on. Teach loose-lead walking while the dog is still light enough for it to be a conversation rather than a contest.

What to expect from a Sheepadoodle puppy

They are big, bouncy and slow to grow up, and the adolescent stretch can last well into the second year. None of that is a problem in a household that expected it.

Handling and grooming should start on day one. A puppy that has been brushed all over, had its feet held and stood quietly for a few minutes at a time becomes a dog the groomer can work with.
