Tiny by design, loud by heritage

The Yoranian crosses a Yorkshire Terrier with a Pomeranian. Both parents are toy-sized, and both arrive with a personality that is comprehensively out of proportion to the body carrying it.

The Yorkshire Terrier began as a working terrier in the mills and mines of northern England before becoming a fashionable companion. Underneath the silk it is still a terrier: bold, persistent and quick to react.

The Pomeranian is a spitz, bred down from much larger northern working dogs, and it kept the double coat, the pricked ears, the tail over the back and the spitz habit of announcing things.

Between them you get a very small dog that is confident, busy, deeply attached to its people and entirely willing to tell the street about it.

Voice, and the off switch

Two alert parent breeds means barking is a design feature rather than a defect, and it is much easier to shape early than to unpick later.

Do three things from the first week. Give the dog enough occupation that it is not barking out of boredom — a chew, a scatter feed, a few minutes of training. Avoid rewarding the bark with attention, including the attention of telling it off. And actively reward the pause: mark the quiet, name it, and practise the cue when nothing is happening rather than only in the middle of an episode.

A Yoranian that alerts once and then settles is a very pleasant apartment dog. One that has been allowed to run the window for a year is a different proposition.

The coat depends on the parent it favours

A Yorkie-leaning coat is fine, straight and silky, growing continuously and tangling rather than shedding. It wants combing every day or two and a trim every couple of months.

A Pomeranian-leaning coat is a plush double coat that stands away from the body and sheds properly, in seasonal pushes. It wants an undercoat rake and line brushing, and it should be tidied rather than shaved — the outer coat is part of how the dog copes with sun, which matters through a Florida summer.

Living with a very small dog

Scale the household to the dog. Sofas and beds are a long drop for something this light, so steps or a ramp are a sensible investment. A harness rather than a neck collar is standard practice for toy breeds on a lead.

Make a rule early that the puppy is put down to walk rather than carried everywhere. Small dogs that spend their formative months at head height often grow up finding ground level alarming, and the fix costs nothing at twelve weeks.

House-training runs on the usual toy-breed maths: small bladder, frequent trips, fixed routine, an appropriately sized crate, and patience.
