A terrier in a soft coat

The Silkypoo crosses a Silky Terrier with a Poodle, and the first half of that sentence is the half people underestimate.

The Silky Terrier is an Australian breed with Yorkshire Terrier and Australian Terrier behind it. It looks like a toy dog — small, fine-boned, with a flat, silky coat parted along the back — but it was bred as a working terrier and it kept the temperament. Silkies are busy, curious, quick to react and thoroughly convinced of their own competence.

The Poodle side adds trainability, a wave or curl to the coat and a lower shedding tendency. What you end up with is a small, alert, inquisitive dog that is more interested in investigating the house than lying in the middle of it.

Living with the terrier streak

Terrier traits are not faults to be trained out; they are the breed doing what it was made for. The trick is giving them somewhere to go.

Digging, chasing small moving things, following a scent under the sofa, dismantling a toy to find the squeak — all of that is normal. A Silkypoo with a dig box, a flirt pole, a rotation of puzzle toys and a few minutes of daily training will express it appropriately. One with a bare yard and no job will express it on your garden bed.

They also tend to be persistent. A terrier that has been rewarded once for barking at the window will try that approach again for weeks. Be consistent early and you save yourself a long argument later.

Coat and grooming

Coat depends on which parent it favours. A Silky-leaning coat is fine, straight and inclined to tangle. A Poodle-leaning coat is wavier and holds its hair, which means less shedding and more matting. Most Silkypoos sit somewhere between.

Either way, comb to the skin every day or two rather than brushing the surface, and pay attention to the ears, the harness line and the backs of the legs. Plan on a professional groom every couple of months, and keep the hair trimmed back from the eyes between visits.

Fine coats tangle faster when they are damp, so comb through after a bath or a wet walk rather than letting it dry as it lies.

Exercise and training

More than you would guess from the size. A Silkypoo wants a proper walk with things to sniff, plus something structured — recall games, trick training, scent searches. Terriers are quick learners when the reward is worth having, and this cross responds well to short, upbeat, food-based sessions.

Recall needs building on a long line before you rely on it. A terrier with something interesting in its nose is genuinely deaf.

The puppy stage

Small dog, ordinary rules. House-training runs on frequent trips and a fixed routine. A harness rather than a neck collar is standard for toy breeds. And socialisation matters as much here as it does in a big breed — a confident little dog that has met the world calmly is a pleasure to own.
