Three small breeds in one puppy

The Morkiepoo brings together the Maltese, the Yorkshire Terrier and the Poodle. Three parent breeds is more than most crosses carry, and each one contributes something you can point at.

The Maltese brings softness — a companion breed with no working job in its history and a preference for human company over everything else. The Yorkshire Terrier brings the spark: it began as a working terrier in the mills and mines of northern England, and terriers do not do half measures. The Poodle brings wave to the coat, a low shedding tendency and a quick, trainable mind.

The result is a very small dog with a large personality, and a fair amount of variation between littermates. Three breeds in the mix means coat texture, ear carriage and character all sit on a wider spectrum than they would in a first cross.

Character

Busy, confident and firmly attached to its people. A Morkiepoo will follow you around the house, complain when a door closes between you, and greet a visitor with more noise than a dog that size should be able to produce.

The terrier contribution is the part worth planning for. Terriers are persistent, self-directed and willing to argue. That makes them entertaining and it makes them a dog that will train you if you do not train them. Decide the house rules before the puppy arrives, and apply them from day one — including whether the dog is picked up every time it asks.

Coat

Wavy, fine and inclined to hold rather than drop its hair. That means little shedding around the house and a lot of combing.

Work a comb right through to the skin every day or two, especially behind the ears, around the harness line and under the front legs. Book a trim every couple of months. Face furnishings on this cross grow into the eyes and need tidying between full grooms, and a small pair of blunt-nosed scissors kept in a drawer is a useful thing to own.

Expect a rough patch when the puppy coat gives way to the adult one during the first year. It passes.

Living with a very small dog

Toy-sized puppies need the household adjusted around them. Sofas and beds are a long way down for a four-pound dog, so ramps or steps are worth having. A harness rather than a neck collar is standard practice for toy breeds on a lead. And it is worth agreeing early that the puppy is put down on the floor to walk rather than carried everywhere, or you will end up with an adult that cannot cope with the ground.

House-training takes patience for the same reason it does with any toy breed — small bladder, frequent trips, fixed routine. It works; it just takes longer than the internet suggests.
