We are open today! Come visit our beautiful Mini Newfypoo puppies we have for sale at Blue Sky Puppies!

Smaller than a Newfypoo — still not a small dog

The Newfypoo crosses a Newfoundland with a Poodle. The standard version is a genuinely large animal. The Mini Newfypoo is produced through the smaller Poodle lines to bring the adult size down, and the important word in that sentence is “down”, not “small”. Set your expectations at a medium-to-large dog that is easier to manage than a full Newfypoo, rather than at a lapdog with a Newfoundland face.

Adult size varies by litter, and more so than in a first cross between two same-sized parents. Ask our staff what the parents of a particular puppy look like before you commit to a crate size.

The temperament people come for

Newfoundlands are known for an unhurried manner — slow to startle, slow to escalate, inclined to lie down in the middle of the room and stay there. The Poodle side adds quickness, trainability and a coat that sheds less. A Mini Newfypoo generally sits between the two: steadier than a doodle bred from a sporting or herding line, brighter and more responsive than the Newfoundland alone.

They are attached, sociable dogs that like being in company. They are not, on the whole, dogs that patrol or fuss.

Coat and grooming

This is a thickly coated cross and grooming is the single biggest ongoing commitment. The coat runs from wavy to curly, and on a bigger dog there is simply more of it — more surface, more friction points, more places for mats to start.

Comb to the skin several times a week, working in lines rather than skimming the surface, and concentrate on the friction zones: behind the ears, under the collar, in the armpits, along the back legs and under the tail. Book professional grooming on a regular cycle and keep it booked; catching up on a neglected coat of this size is expensive and uncomfortable for the dog.

Heat is a planning problem

A heavy-coated dog in a Florida summer or a humid Tennessee August needs a routine built around the weather. Walk early and walk late. Keep to shade and grass rather than midday asphalt. Have water available and be willing to cut a walk short. Air conditioning, a cool floor and a shaded yard do more for a coated dog than any amount of clipping.

Growth and the puppy year

Larger-framed puppies grow for longer than small ones, and most owners of big breeds keep exercise low-impact while that is happening — free play on grass rather than long runs on pavement, and stairs kept to a minimum in the early months.

Two other things pay off early. Teach lead manners before the puppy is heavy enough to make it a problem, because a dog you can walk on a loose lead at thirty pounds is a dog you can walk at seventy. And get the puppy comfortable being handled, brushed and lifted while it is still easy to pick up.

Come and meet one
