Two spitz breeds, crossed

The KeeshondKlee pairs a Keeshond with an Alaskan Klee Kai. Both are spitz-type dogs, which means both bring the same basic template: a wedge-shaped head, small pricked ears, a thick double coat, and a tail carried curled over the back. Crossing two dogs of the same family gives a more predictable outline than most designer pairings.

The parents come from very different places. The Keeshond is Dutch, developed as a barge dog and watchdog on the canals, and it is a notably sociable breed. The Alaskan Klee Kai is much more recent, created in Alaska in the second half of the twentieth century as a smaller companion-sized spitz, and it has a reputation for being reserved with people it does not know.

What that combination usually means

Expect an alert, watchful dog with an expressive face and an unmistakably spitz look. Size sits between the two parents and varies by individual, so ask about the specific puppy rather than assuming.

Temperament tends to blend the Keeshond’s sociability with the Klee Kai’s caution. Some KeeshondKlees are outgoing, some hang back with strangers, and early socialization has an outsized influence on which way an individual goes. Start young and keep going: new people, new places, calm adult dogs, ordinary household noise.

Both parent breeds are vocal. Spitz dogs announce things. Training a settle after the first alert, rather than trying to eliminate barking, is the realistic approach.

The double coat

This is the main daily commitment. A dense woolly undercoat sits beneath a longer, harsher outer coat that stands off the body, and it is heaviest around the neck.

Brush thoroughly once or twice a week with a slicker, then work through with a comb or undercoat rake so you reach the layer that actually mats. Twice a year the undercoat sheds out in earnest, and daily brushing during those weeks makes the difference between managing it and living in it.

Do not shave a double coat. It insulates against heat as well as cold, and it does not always grow back correctly. Ask a groomer experienced with spitz breeds what they recommend for the Florida climate.

Heat, exercise, and containment

Both parent breeds are built for cold weather. In a Florida or Tennessee summer, exercise early and late, keep sessions short in high heat, and provide shade, water, and air conditioning during the day.

Exercise needs are moderate to high. Plan on a proper daily walk plus play and some mental work. Spitz breeds are clever and independent, so training should be short, rewarding, and frequent rather than long and repetitive.

Containment deserves attention. Northern breeds have a well-earned reputation for testing fences and gates, and recall is often unreliable. A secure fence and a leash in open spaces.
