Havanese warmth with a terrier edge

The Havashire crosses a Havanese with a Yorkshire Terrier. It is a pairing of two very small dogs from completely different backgrounds, and the contrast is what makes the cross interesting.

The Havanese is Cuba’s national dog, bred across generations purely as a household companion, and it is sociable, soft, and thoroughly people-oriented. The Yorkshire Terrier started out as a working ratter in the mills and mines of northern England before it became a fashionable lapdog, and the terrier is still in there under the silk.

A Havashire usually reads as a tiny, silky-coated companion with a confident streak and a habit of investigating things.

What varies, and what does not

Size stays small in every direction, since both parents are toy-sized. Coat, coloring, ear set, and temperament all vary more, depending on which parent a given puppy favors.

The consistent thread is confidence. This is not a timid cross. Expect a small dog that walks into a room like it owns the lease, notices anything new, and has an opinion about the doorbell.

The coat is hair, not fur

Yorkshire Terrier coat is unusual: it grows continuously and has a texture closer to human hair than to typical dog fur. Havanese coat is softer and often wavy. Either way, a Havashire coat sheds very little and needs regular hands-on maintenance.

Brush most days with a pin brush and follow with a metal comb, working in sections down to the skin. A silky, long-growing coat tangles quietly and mats under the surface. Professional grooming every six weeks or so keeps things in order.

Many owners keep this cross in a shorter clip, which is easier to maintain and comfortable in Florida heat. Keep the hair around the eyes trimmed or clipped back, and check ears weekly.

Confidence needs socialization

A bold small dog is delightful when it has met the world and difficult when it has not. Take socialization seriously from the day the puppy comes home: different people, different surfaces, car rides, calm adult dogs, ordinary household noise.

Terrier heritage also brings some prey drive, so expect interest in lizards, squirrels, and anything that darts. A leash and a real fence, and recall training that continues throughout the dog’s life.

Supervise all interactions between a dog this small and young children, and give the puppy a crate or bed where it can retreat undisturbed.

Teeth and daily care

Toy breeds carry a full set of teeth in a small jaw, and dental care is the most valuable habit you can build. Start in week one: touch the muzzle, lift the lips, progress to a finger brush, then a soft toothbrush, most days.

Exercise needs are light. A daily walk plus indoor play and a short training game covers it.
