Two American terriers, crossed

The Foxy Rat Terrier is a Toy Fox Terrier crossed with a Rat Terrier. Both parents come out of the same American farm-dog tradition, bred to control vermin around barns and homesteads, and both are small, smooth-coated, quick, and thoroughly alert.

Because the parents are so similar in type, this cross is more predictable than most. Expect a compact dog with a short, close coat, upright or semi-upright ears, a fine build with real muscle, and reflexes that are noticeably faster than the average small dog.

Terrier drive is the headline

This is not a lapdog with a terrier name. Both parent breeds were selected for the willingness to chase, corner, and dispatch small fast animals, and that drive is intact.

Practically, that means a securely fenced yard, a leash or long line in open spaces, and realistic expectations around squirrels, lizards, and the neighbor’s cat. Recall training is a lifelong project with a dog like this, not a weekend one, and it is worth every session you put in.

It also means an outlet. Flirt poles, fetch, tug with rules, and scent games all channel the drive into something that ends well. A terrier with no job finds one, usually involving your baseboards.

Character and household life

Foxy Rat Terriers are affectionate with their own people and often quite demonstrative about it. They tend to be busy, curious, and quick to notice anything new. Many are talkative, and an alert bark at the window is very much in character.

They are also clever. Both parents are known for problem-solving, which makes training rewarding and containment interesting. Latches, gaps in fences, and gates left ajar are all worth checking.

Training and socialization

Start early and keep it upbeat. These dogs are fast learners with short attention spans, so two or three minutes at a time and finish on a win. Food works, but so do toys, and a terrier that gets to chase a tug as the reward will work hard for it.

Socialization matters. A confident, well-socialized terrier is a delightful dog; one that only met its own household can become reactive with strangers and other dogs. Introduce your puppy to varied people, places, sounds, and calm adult dogs while it is young, and supervise all interactions with young children.

Easy grooming, real exercise

The coat is the simple part: a weekly rub with a rubber curry mitt, an occasional bath, and that is essentially it. Nails, teeth, and ears follow the usual small-dog schedule, with teeth deserving genuine daily effort.

Exercise is where the work goes. Plan on a proper daily walk plus active play, and add mental work on top. This is an athletic small dog, not a decorative one.
