A Fluffy French Bulldog is a French Bulldog that carries a recessive long-coat gene. Everything else about the dog is the breed you already know: the compact, muscular little body, the broad chest, the flat face, and the upright bat ears. What changes is the coat, which grows longer and softer, with noticeable feathering around the ears, neck, chest, and legs.

The gene has existed in the breed for a long time and shows up when both parents carry it. The result looks like a Frenchie that has been given a fringe, and it is a striking thing to see in person.

Temperament is pure French Bulldog

Coat length has nothing to do with personality, so expect the breed’s usual character: funny, stubborn, deeply attached to people, and surprisingly quiet for a dog with so much presence.

Frenchies are companion dogs to the core. They want to be in the room, preferably on the furniture, ideally on you. They are not a breed to leave alone all day, and they will let you know their opinion on the matter. Most are sociable and confident with visitors, and most have a comedic streak that survives well into adulthood.

Training works best as a game. This is a clever breed that is not remotely biddable, and repetition bores it fast. Two-minute sessions, excellent treats, and a sense of humor get results. Housetraining takes patience and a schedule.

Heat is the thing to plan around

French Bulldogs have a shortened muzzle, and short-faced dogs move air far less efficiently than long-nosed ones. In Central Florida and in a Tennessee summer, that is the single most important thing to build your routine around.

Walk in the early morning and the evening. Keep sessions short when it is hot and humid. Never leave the dog in a parked car, even briefly. Keep water available and a cool indoor space to rest in during the day. Watch for heavy puffing and end the activity before the dog asks you to. Most Frenchies are also poor swimmers given the body shape, so treat pools with caution and use a life vest around water.

Grooming a fluffy coat

The long coat needs more than the standard smooth Frenchie routine. Brush a few times a week to keep the feathering free of tangles, especially behind the ears and around the neck, and comb through afterwards.

Facial folds still need the usual attention: a wipe with a soft damp cloth and a proper dry afterwards, as part of the weekly routine. Keep ears clean, nails trimmed, and the coat around the rear tidy.

Exercise and daily life

Modest. Short walks, indoor play, and mental work suit the breed, and it adapts easily to apartments. Give the dog something to think about rather than distance to cover.
