Dachshund crossed with Poodle

The Doxiepoo takes the Dachshund’s long, low, unmistakable outline and pairs it with the Poodle’s coat and brain. It is a cross with real appeal for people who love the Dachshund shape but would rather deal with grooming appointments than with shedding.

Outcomes vary. Some Doxiepoos are firmly Dachshund-shaped with a curly coat, others sit taller with longer legs. Coat runs anywhere from loosely wavy to tightly curled, and the Poodle parent may be a toy or a miniature, which affects the size range. This is a cross to judge one puppy at a time rather than by the label.

Brains from both sides

Poodles are consistently ranked among the most trainable dogs anywhere. Dachshunds are equally intelligent and considerably more independent about it. A Doxiepoo usually inherits both: quick to work things out, and quite capable of deciding that your suggestion is optional.

Training goes best when it is short, rewarding, and interesting. Keep sessions to a few minutes, pay well, and change up the exercises so the dog stays curious. If your Doxiepoo starts ignoring you, the usual cause is boredom rather than defiance.

Nose and voice

Dachshund heritage means a nose that engages the moment you open the door and a voice that carries. Both are manageable with a plan. Give the dog scent work as a deliberate activity, hiding treats around a room and letting it search, and it will need less mileage to settle. Teach a quiet cue early and reward calm after the first alert bark rather than trying to eliminate barking altogether.

Recall deserves particular attention. A scent-driven dog off leash in an unfenced space is a dog that may not hear you.

Coat care

If your puppy takes the Poodle coat, expect low shedding and a real grooming routine. Brush and comb three or four times a week down to the skin, and book a professional groom every six weeks or so. Behind the ears and under the front legs mat first.

A wavier coat is more forgiving but still needs regular work. Keep the face trimmed clear of the eyes and the feet tidy, and check ears weekly since both parent breeds carry drop ears.

Habits for a long body

If the puppy inherits Dachshund proportions, build a few habits early: discourage leaping down from furniture, provide steps or a ramp to favorite spots, lift with support under both the chest and the rear, use a harness instead of a neck collar, and keep the dog trim. These are small everyday choices that are much easier to establish in puppyhood.

Come and meet a Doxiepoo

Given how much variation this cross carries, there is no substitute for seeing the puppies. Ours come from our licensed breeders, and our staff can tell you about the coat and character of each one currently in store.
