The badger dog

Dachshund translates literally from German as badger dog, and the name is a job description. The breed was developed in Germany to follow badgers and other burrowing animals underground, which explains the entire design: a long body and short legs to work in a tunnel, a deep chest for lung capacity, large paws for digging, and a loud voice so the hunter above ground could hear where the dog had got to.

Nothing about the modern Dachshund is accidental. When your puppy digs up a cushion, tracks a smell across the yard, or announces a delivery driver at surprising volume, it is doing exactly what generations of breeding asked for.

Sizes and coats

Dachshunds come in two sizes, standard and miniature, and in three coat types.

Smooth coats are short and close-lying and need little more than a weekly wipe-down. Longhaired coats are silky with feathering on the ears, chest, legs, and tail, and want brushing several times a week to stay tangle-free. Wirehaired coats are harsh and dense with a beard and eyebrows, and need brushing plus occasional hand-stripping or trimming to keep the texture.

Coat type also comes with a slight difference in reputation for temperament, with wirehaired dogs often described as the most terrier-ish of the three and longhaired as the most laid-back. Individual variation matters more than the rule.

Bold, funny, and stubborn

Dachshunds are bold, funny, and famously determined. They were bred to go down a hole alone and make their own decisions, and that independence is still very much present.

The practical consequence is that training a Dachshund is a negotiation rather than a download. They learn quickly when they see something in it for them, and they are perfectly capable of hearing a command and choosing otherwise. Short sessions, good food rewards, and consistency from everyone in the house work far better than repetition or pressure.

They also bond hard. Expect a dog that wants to be under a blanket with you, and a dog that has opinions about strangers approaching its people. Early socialization takes the edge off that.

Looking after a long back

A few habits are worth building from day one with a long-backed dog. Discourage jumping down from beds and sofas, and provide steps or a ramp if the dog likes being up there. Support the chest and the rear when you lift, rather than picking the dog up under the front legs. Keep your Dachshund lean rather than round, since extra weight makes everything harder on that frame. Use a harness rather than a neck collar.

Exercise and digging

Two moderate walks a day plus play suits most Dachshunds. Give them a sanctioned outlet for digging, such as a sandbox or a snuffle mat, and your flowerbeds will fare better.

Scent games are the single best way to tire this breed out. Hide treats around a room, let the dog work, and watch how tired a fifteen-minute search makes it.
