A Corgi outline under a poodle coat
The Corgipoo crosses a Pembroke Welsh Corgi with a Poodle, usually a Miniature or a Toy. The draw is obvious the moment one comes across the floor toward you: the low, long, big-eared Corgi outline, wearing a soft wavy or curly coat instead of the Corgi’s thick double one.
It is a cross rather than a breed. There is no Corgipoo standard and no registry writing one, which means nothing about the type is fixed and every puppy is its own proposition. That is worth knowing before you start looking, and it is also why people enjoy the cross so much — you are not choosing between a row of near-identical dogs.
The two halves
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a herding dog from south-west Wales and a very old one. The name comes from the Welsh cor gi, usually translated as dwarf dog. Its job was moving cattle, which it did from close in behind the herd, low to the ground and quick enough to get out of the way again. That is where the shape comes from: short legs, a long deep body, a broad chest and enormous upright ears on a foxy head. The job also produced the temperament — bright, bold, funny, watchful, and extremely attached to its own people. The American Kennel Club recognized the Pembroke in 1934, and Queen Elizabeth II kept them for most of her life, which did nothing to lower the breed’s profile.
The Poodle came out of northern Europe as a water retriever. The name is German, from pudeln, to splash about, and the elaborate show clip everyone pictures began life as a working trim that left the coat long over the chest and the joints and took it short everywhere else so the dog could swim properly. Poodles are routinely placed among the most trainable dogs there are, and they are cheerful, sociable and closely tuned to people. The Miniature stands up to fifteen inches at the shoulder and the Toy under ten.
Put those two together and the theme holds even when the appearance does not. Both parents are clever working dogs bred to take direction and to enjoy taking it.
Size, colour and how much littermates differ
A first cross is a genuine roll of the dice, and Corgipoo litters show it plainly. Some puppies come out unmistakably Corgi-shaped, with short legs, a long back and ears like satellite dishes. Others stand taller and longer in the leg, with a poodle head on top. Coat runs anywhere from a loose wave to a proper curl. Two puppies from one litter can look like different crosses altogether, and both are correct, because there is nothing for them to be incorrect against.
Most adults land somewhere between ten and fourteen inches at the shoulder and between twelve and thirty pounds, with the size of the Poodle parent doing most of the work in setting that range. Colour is wide open: red, sable and fawn out of the Corgi side; cream, apricot, black, silver and parti-colours out of the Poodle side; and often the Corgi’s white collar, blaze and feet laid over the top of any of them.
All of which is a long way of saying that this is a cross you choose by meeting individual puppies rather than by reading a description of one.
The coat and the weekly routine
Coat is the practical question, and the answer depends on which parent won.
A poodle-type coat — wavy or curly, single, slow to drop hair — sheds very little and asks for a routine instead. Brush and comb it three or four times a week, working right down to the skin rather than skating across the top, and give a little extra attention behind the ears, under the front legs and around the collar. Add a professional groom every six to eight weeks and the coat stays soft and easy for the whole of the dog’s life. Most owners settle into a standing appointment and stop thinking about it.
A coat that leans Corgi is a double coat, and it trades the appointments for a rake. One session a week with an undercoat rake keeps it in order for most of the year, and twice a year, when the undercoat turns over with the seasons, the rake comes out daily for a fortnight and fills a bag with soft fluff before things go back to normal.
Either way the rest of the list is short. Nails a little and often, ears wiped while you are already grooming, and teeth brushed from the first week so a puppy decides the toothbrush is a game.
A quick mind that likes a job
Neither parent was designed to be an ornament, and a Corgipoo is a properly clever animal that is at its best with something to do.
The good news is that something to do is easy to supply and mostly free. Twenty minutes of thinking does more for this cross than an hour of aimless yard time. Puzzle feeders, a scent game with three cups and a treat underneath one of them, five minutes of trick training before dinner, a walk that takes a new street and allows real time to read the ground — all of it counts, and a Corgipoo that has had some of it is a settled, easy dog for the rest of the day.
Training itself is a pleasure. Both parents are quick studies who like being right, so short cheerful sessions with proper payment get results fast. Ask for one thing at a time, mark it the moment it happens, and stop while the dog still wants another go. Corgipoos take well to the sports too — agility, rally, obedience, trick titles and scent work all suit the mind and the build.
The herding side turns up in ordinary domestic ways. A Corgipoo tends to keep track of where everyone in the house is, drift out to collect anybody who has wandered off, and take a rolling ball far more seriously than the ball deserves. It will also let you know when somebody is at the door, in a voice with real Corgi in it. Teaching a settle cue in the first few weeks turns all of that into something you enjoy about the dog.
With their own people Corgipoos are affectionate and physically close, and they usually attach to the whole household rather than singling out one person. They are playful with children, sociable with other dogs they have grown up around, and about as good-humoured a small dog as you could ask for.
