Spaniel warmth in a smaller build

Cocker Spaniel crossed with Shih Tzu

The Cock-A-Tzu is a Cocker Spaniel bred to a Shih Tzu. It is a cross that shrinks the spaniel down while keeping most of the warmth, and it borrows the Shih Tzu’s sturdy little build and long flowing coat.

Shih Tzus were bred as palace companions in China and Tibet; Cockers were bred to work fields and hedgerows in Britain. The blend usually reads as a small, solid dog that likes a walk and loves a lap, and it is one of the friendlier crosses to live with.

Temperament

Sociable is the word most owners reach for. Cock-A-Tzus tend to greet people happily, settle into household routines quickly, and want to be part of things rather than observe from a distance.

The Cocker side brings a wish to please that makes training straightforward, and the Shih Tzu side brings a streak of independence that keeps it interesting. Both parents are sensitive to tone, so encouragement works and sharpness backfires.

The coat, and the clip question

Expect a long coat that needs regular attention. Shih Tzu hair grows continuously and Cocker feathering is dense, so between them there is plenty to manage.

Brushing every other day at minimum, ideally most days, working in sections down to the skin. A slicker for the body and a metal comb to catch what remains. Professional grooming every four to six weeks.

Many owners choose a shorter clip, which suits the Florida climate and cuts the daily workload substantially without losing the dog’s character. Either way, keep the face trimmed so hair does not sit against the eyes, and keep the feet and sanitary area neat.

Ears and warm weather

Long drop ears from both sides mean ear care is a weekly job: check them, trim the hair around the opening, and dry them well after baths or swimming.

If your puppy inherits a shorter Shih Tzu muzzle, plan walks around the heat. Early mornings and evenings, shorter sessions in July and August, water available, and rest indoors during the hottest hours.

How much activity they need

Moderate needs. A daily walk, some play, and a bit of mental work is plenty for most. Puzzle feeders and short training games work well for a dog that is clever but not driven.

Housetraining benefits from a strict schedule. Take the puppy out on a timer rather than waiting for signals, praise immediately outside, and keep the routine identical between everyone in the household.

Coat length, muzzle shape, and size all vary in this cross, and the differences are easier to judge in person. Our Cock-A-Tzu puppies come from our licensed breeders.
