Chihuahua crossed with Cavalier

The Chilier is a Chihuahua bred to a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. The appeal of the cross is easy to state: it keeps the very small size and the confidence of the Chihuahua, and adds the softer, more openly sociable temperament of the toy spaniel.

Individual puppies vary. Some have the Chihuahua’s apple head and large upright ears, others the Cavalier’s rounder skull and long drop ears, and many sit somewhere in the middle with a coat that could be short or feathered.

What a Chilier is like

The common thread is people-focus. Chihuahuas famously attach hard to one person, and Cavaliers attach to everyone in the room. A Chilier usually lands between those two settings: devoted to its household, generally happy to greet visitors, and rarely far from a lap.

They are alert dogs, quick to notice a car door or a knock. Reward calm after the alert rather than trying to switch the instinct off, and you end up with a dog that tells you something happened and then lets it go.

Very small dogs need handling rules

Size is the practical headline. A dog this light can be hurt by an ordinary household accident, so build habits that account for it: no jumping down from beds and sofas onto hard floors, feet checked before you move a chair, and children taught to sit on the floor to interact with the puppy rather than pick it up. Every interaction between a toy dog and a young child needs an adult present, every time.

A harness rather than a neck collar spreads the pressure better on a small dog that pulls, and it makes walks more comfortable for both of you.

Coat variation

Short-coated Chiliers are easy: a weekly once-over with a soft brush and an occasional bath. Longer, feathered coats need brushing several times a week, with a comb through the ear fringes, chest, and back of the legs where tangles form.

Both types need the same attention to nails and teeth. Small mouths crowd easily, so start brushing teeth in the first week and keep it up.

Training and socialization

Chiliers are bright and food-driven, and they train well when the sessions are short and positive. The reason toy breeds get a reputation for being untrained is usually that owners skip training rather than that the dogs cannot learn.

Socialize deliberately. A small dog that has only met its own household will find the world alarming; one that met a wide range of people, dogs, floors, and sounds while young stays relaxed about it.
