The Cavatzu brings together two of the oldest companion-dog lines going. The Cavalier descends from the toy spaniels painted at the side of European nobility for centuries. The Shih Tzu comes from Tibetan and Chinese palace dogs kept for exactly the same reason. Neither breed has ever been asked to work for a living, and it shows in the friendliest possible way.

The result is a small, sociable dog whose whole design brief is companionship.

Built for the sofa

Cavatzus are generally relaxed dogs. They enjoy a walk, they enjoy a game, and then they enjoy several hours of doing nothing at all in close physical contact with a person. If you want a running partner, look elsewhere. If you want a dog that will sit with you while you work, this cross fits.

That easygoing nature makes them adaptable. Apartments, houses, retirees, busy families with someone usually home, all tend to work as long as the dog is included in daily life rather than parked in another room.

Faces, muzzles, and warm weather

The Shih Tzu contributes a shortened muzzle, and the degree that shows up varies from puppy to puppy. A shorter-faced dog moves air less efficiently, which matters a great deal in Central Florida and in a Tennessee August.

Practical adjustments: walk early morning and evening, keep sessions short in the heat, never leave the dog in a parked car, and give it a cool indoor spot during the hottest part of the day. Watch for heavy puffing and stop the activity before the dog needs you to.

Facial folds and the eye area benefit from a daily wipe with a soft damp cloth, dried afterwards.

Coat, and the clip decision

Expect a long, dense coat that needs work. Brush thoroughly at least every other day, right down to the skin, and comb through afterwards. Book professional grooming every four to six weeks.

A shorter clip is a completely reasonable choice, particularly in the Florida climate, and most owners find it easier to maintain than a full coat. Keep the hair around the eyes trimmed or tied back so it does not sit against them, and keep the ears clean and dry.

Training and housetraining

Both parent breeds are willing but neither is a driven worker, so short reward-based sessions beat repetition. Housetraining small dogs takes consistency: a fixed schedule, frequent trips outside, generous praise for getting it right, and no scolding for accidents you did not catch in the act.

Teach settling on a mat and being alone in small doses from the start, because a dog this attached to people needs the skill.
