Spaniel meets spitz

The Cavapom crosses a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with a Pomeranian. It is an interesting pairing because the two parents come from completely different families. The Cavalier is a toy spaniel bred as a lapdog and companion; the Pomeranian is a spitz, descended from much larger northern sled and working dogs, shrunk down over generations but keeping the wedge face, pricked ears, and plumed tail of its ancestors.

Cross them and you get a small, notably fluffy dog whose look can lean either way. Some carry the Pom’s stand-off coat and foxy expression, others the Cavalier’s rounder head and long feathered ears.

What the coat is like

Both parents contribute a lot of hair, so grooming is a real part of owning this cross. A Pomeranian-type coat has a dense undercoat and a longer, harsher outer coat that stands away from the body; a Cavalier-type coat is flatter and silkier with feathering.

Either way, brush several times a week with a slicker and finish with a comb to catch what the brush missed. Undercoat needs particular attention during heavy shedding periods, when a rake will remove more in ten minutes than a brush does in an hour. Keep feet, ears, and the sanitary area trimmed between professional grooms.

Alertness and noise

Pomeranians are watchful and vocal by heritage, and it is fair to expect some of that in a Cavapom. A small dog that announces the mail carrier is doing exactly what its ancestors were rewarded for.

The Cavalier side often takes the edge off, but if you live in an apartment it is worth training a quiet cue early and rewarding the dog for settling after one or two barks rather than trying to eliminate the behavior entirely. Giving the dog something predictable to do when the doorbell rings works better than telling it off.

Training a small, confident dog

Both parent breeds are bright and food-motivated, which makes early training straightforward if you start young. Keep sessions to a few minutes, use small soft treats, and finish while the puppy is still interested.

Socialization matters more than most people expect with toy breeds. Small dogs that meet a narrow slice of the world grow suspicious of the rest of it. Introduce your Cavapom puppy to different people, surfaces, noises, and calm adult dogs while it is young.

Everyday care

Exercise needs are light: a daily walk, indoor play, and some mental work. Teeth need attention, as they do in every toy breed, so build a brushing habit from the first week. Nails grow quickly on dogs that do not cover much pavement.

Come and meet the Cavapoms

Because the look varies so much between individuals, this is a cross best judged in person. Ours come from our licensed breeders, and our team can tell you how each puppy has been behaving in store, which tells you more than a photo does.

Visit us in Orlando or Nashville. Find your nearest store, and ask about payment plans if you would like to spread the cost.
