Two companion breeds, crossed

The Cavamalt pairs a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with a Maltese. Both parents were bred for one purpose across several centuries: to be excellent company. Neither has a working job in its background, neither needs a farm, and both have spent most of their history on somebody’s lap.

That shared history is why this cross tends to be consistent in the thing that matters most. Whatever a Cavamalt inherits in coat or size, it almost always inherits the wish to be near you.

The silky coat

Maltese coats are long, straight, and fine. Cavalier coats are silky with feathering on the ears, chest, legs, and tail. A Cavamalt usually lands somewhere between the two, which means a soft coat that looks lovely and tangles readily.

Plan on brushing most days. Use a pin brush followed by a metal comb, and work in sections so you reach the skin rather than gliding over the top. Behind the ears, under the front legs, and around the collar are where mats start.

Many owners keep the coat in a shorter puppy clip, which cuts daily brushing down considerably and still looks good. A professional groom every six weeks or so keeps either style in order, and a quick face wipe each day keeps the eye area tidy.

Disposition

Expect an affectionate, attentive little dog that follows you between rooms and settles on the nearest available person. Cavaliers are famously soft-natured and Maltese are lively and confident, so the mix is usually gentle without being dull.

They are responsive to training, and they take correction badly. Reward-based training with a light touch gets you much further than firmness with either parent breed.

Time alone

The honest caveat with any companion cross is that a dog bred for company wants company. Cavamalts can struggle when left alone for long stretches, and the fix is to build the skill deliberately rather than hope for it.

Start on day one with brief absences that end before the puppy gets upset, pair the crate with something good, and stretch the time gradually. A dog that learns being alone is normal handles a full workday far better than one who first meets the experience at six months old.

Exercise and life at home

A short daily walk and some indoor play covers a Cavamalt’s physical needs, which makes this a genuinely practical apartment dog. Add a few minutes of training or a puzzle toy for the mental side.

Small dogs gain weight easily. Measure meals, count treats, and use part of the daily ration for training rather than adding to it.
