Beagle nose, Cavalier heart
The Beaglier is a Beagle crossed with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. It is one of the more intuitive designer crosses, because the two parents complement each other in a way you can actually predict: the Beagle brings a hound’s nose, stamina, and cheerful independence, while the Cavalier brings softness, a strong pull toward human company, and a smaller frame.
The result is usually a compact, sociable dog somewhere under Beagle size, with a rounded head, long low-set ears, and an expression that gets a reaction in public.
What day-to-day life looks like
Beagliers are companion-oriented. Cavalier heritage means most of them want to be in the room with you, and a good number want to be on the sofa next to you. Beagle heritage means they also want something to do, and they are not the kind of small dog that is content to spend eight hours on a cushion.
Expect a happy, engaged dog with a decent appetite and a nose that switches on the moment the front door opens. Many owners find that the two sides show up at different times of day: busy and inquisitive in the morning, thoroughly horizontal by evening.
Exercise, and the recall problem
Anything with hound in it needs a conversation about recall. When a Beagle-descended dog picks up a scent, the ears close and the world narrows to the trail. That is not disobedience, it is the job the breed was built for.
Practical answer: a securely fenced yard, a leash or a long line in open spaces, and recall training that you treat as a lifelong project rather than a box to tick. Reward returning generously and never punish a dog that comes back late, or you teach it not to come back at all.
A daily walk with plenty of sniffing time plus some play covers most Beagliers. Scent games at home, where you hide treats and let the dog find them, tire this cross out faster than laps around the block.
Coat and grooming
Coats vary. Some Beagliers inherit the Beagle’s short, dense coat, which is a weekly once-over with a rubber curry and not much else. Others take the Cavalier’s longer, silkier coat with feathering on the ears and legs, which wants brushing a few times a week to stay tangle-free.
Both parents contribute long drop ears, so make ear checks part of the routine, particularly after swimming or a wet Florida week. Nails, teeth, and a bath when the dog finds something worth rolling in round it out.
Feeding and shape
Beagle appetite is not a myth, and it carries through the cross. Measure meals rather than free-feeding, count treats as part of the daily total, and use part of the food ration for training instead of adding to it. A Beaglier will happily convince you it has not eaten since Tuesday.

How big does a Beaglier get?
Beagles run roughly 20 to 30 pounds and Cavaliers 13 to 18, so most Beagliers settle between those figures, commonly 12 to 22 pounds and 12 to 16 inches at the shoulder. Build varies with the mix as much as weight does. A Beagle-leaning puppy is broader and more substantial through the chest, while a Cavalier-leaning one is lighter and finer in the head.
Do Beagliers howl or bay like a Beagle?
Some do. The hound voice is inherited unevenly, and you cannot tell which you have until the dog is old enough to use it. Most Beagliers are ordinary barkers who save the full hound note for something genuinely interesting. If you live somewhere with shared walls, ask about the individual puppy and teach a quiet cue early rather than hoping for the best.
Are Beagliers good with children and other dogs?
Usually very good. Beagles were bred to work in packs and Cavaliers were bred to sit on people, and neither history produces a dog that objects to company. The thing to manage is food. This cross is seriously motivated by it, and a dog that guards a bowl or a dropped sandwich is far easier to prevent than to fix, so feed the puppy somewhere it will not be crowded.
How much does a Beaglier shed?
More than people expect. Both parents shed, so neither coat type in this cross is a low-shedding one. A short Beagle-style coat drops fine hair steadily all year and a rubber curry brush pulls most of it out before it spreads. A longer Cavalier-style coat sheds in heavier seasonal pushes and needs brushing through the feathering. Neither is difficult, but both need doing.
Do Beagliers get on with cats?
Often, given a sensible introduction and a cat that is used to dogs. The Beagle side follows its nose rather than hunting by sight, so a household cat is usually treated as furniture within a few weeks. Smaller pets are a different conversation. With rabbits, guinea pigs or birds we would keep them physically separate rather than rely on training holding up.
How long do Beagliers usually live?
Both parent breeds are commonly quoted at twelve to fifteen years, and small crosses tend to sit in the same range. Take that as an average rather than an expectation for any particular dog. The biggest thing within your control is weight. This is a cross that will eat whatever it is offered, and a lean Beaglier moves better and stays comfortable for longer.
