One breed, four sizes

The Poodle is a single breed that comes in a range of sizes, and this page brings all of them together so you can compare rather than clicking back and forth.

The size divisions are formal ones. A Standard Poodle stands over 15 inches at the shoulder. A Miniature stands between roughly 10 and 15 inches. A Toy stands around 10 inches or under. The Moyen, sometimes called a medium or klein Poodle, sits between the Miniature and the Standard and is recognized as its own size division in Europe rather than in the United States.

Below the shoulder measurement, though, they are the same dog.

What does not change with size

Every Poodle carries the same underlying temperament and the same coat, and that is the single most useful thing to know when choosing.

Poodles are consistently ranked among the most intelligent and trainable dogs in the world. They were developed in Europe as water retrievers, and the elaborate show clip is a stylized descendant of a working trim that left the coat over the joints and chest while clearing the legs for swimming. The dog under all that hair is an athlete with a working brain.

Expect a sensitive, people-focused, quick-witted animal in every size. Expect it to learn house routines faster than you would like. And expect it to need mental work, because a bored Poodle of any size invents projects.

The coat, in every size

The Poodle’s curly single coat sheds very little, which is the breed’s main practical appeal. The trade-off is consistent grooming, and it applies equally to a four-pound Toy and a sixty-pound Standard.

Plan on brushing three or four times a week, in sections, right down to the skin, followed by a comb to find what the brush missed. Professional grooming every six weeks or so. Start handling paws, ears, muzzle, and tail in the first week home so the routine is normal rather than a fight.

Drop ears mean weekly ear checks, especially after swimming, which most Poodles love regardless of size.

Choosing a size

Think about exercise capacity first. A Standard needs real daily activity: a long walk, a run, fetch, or swimming. A Miniature or Moyen sits in the middle and suits most households. A Toy needs far less physical exercise but exactly the same amount of mental work.

Then think about handling. Smaller Poodles need care around stairs and furniture and are easier to travel with. Larger Poodles need leash manners taught early, while you can still out-muscle them.

Grooming cost scales with size too, since a Standard simply has more coat.
