The Cockapoo is a crossbreed, designer dog mix of a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. The Cockapoo is also known as a Cockerdoodle, Cockapoodle, Cockerpoo, and Cock-a-Poo. Cocker Spaniels and Poodles are very different breeds when it comes to how much each breed sheds, personality, and pet allergies. In order to understand what your Cockapoo will be like, you need to understand the genetic percentages of each generation of Cockapoo.

The genetic percentages of the Cockapoo F2B is 62.5% Poodle and 37.5% Cocker Spaniel. Specifically, the Cockapoo F2B is a cross between a Cockapoo F1, which has a genetic percentage of 50% Poodle and 50% Cocker Spaniel, and a Cockapoo F1B, which has a genetic percentage of 75% Poodle and 25% Cocker Spaniel. On the other hand, a breeder may choose to cross breed a Cockapoo F1B with another Cockapoo F1B to create a Cockapoo F2B. In this case, the genetic percentage of the dog would be 75% Poodle and 25% Cocker Spaniel. In both cases, the Cockapoo F2B will inherit more Poodle qualities rather than the Cocker Spaniel, which means there is a higher probability that the Cockapoo F2B will be non- or low-shedding, and will more likely be hypoallergenic. The Cockapoo F2B is also known as a Multi-generation Cockapoo because they are the third generation of offspring.

Characteristics of the Cockapoo F2B include wavy or curly coats, hypoallergenic, most likely non-shedding, with low hybrid vigor characteristics. Hybrid vigor or heterosis (the scientific name) means that the Poodle and the Cocker Spaniel are crossbred for optimal traits in each of the parent breeds leading to a hybrid breed with genes for better health and personalities than the parent breeds. However, since the Cockapoo F2B is a third generation mix, they will not benefit from hybrid vigor like first and second generation Cockapoos. Cockapoo F2B is generally a healthy breed. 

Cockapoo F2B vary significantly in sizes depending on whether they are a Teacup Toy, Toy, Miniature, or Standard or Maxi Cockapoo. The size of a Cockapoo F2B will primarily depend on which size Poodle was used in the breeding process. A Teacup Toy Cockapoo weighs less than six pounds and is less than 10 inches tall. A Toy Cockapoo can reach up to 10 inches tall and weigh up to 12 pounds. The Miniature Cockapoo is 11 to 14 inches tall and weighs 13 to 18 pounds. The Standard or Maxi Cockapoo is at least 15 inches tall and weighs more than 19 pounds. The Cockapoo’s life expectancy is 12 to 15 years.

Cockapoos are sometimes confused with Cavapoos because of the similarities in appearance and temperament. However, the Cockapoo has a longer muzzle and is a little taller. Cockapoos also tend to be more active and playful than the Cavapoo.

In the United States, American Cocker Spaniels are bred with Poodles. The American Cocker Spaniel has a shorter muzzle and ears than the English Cocker Spaniel. Instead of Cockapoo, the cross breed of an English Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle is generally called a “spoodle.”

The breed was initiated in the United States and its popularity continues to grow. The breed is also very popular in the United Kingdom. Because of their immense popularity, they have become one of the most expensive dog breeds in the United Kingdom.

The Cockapoo F2B was created as a companion dog with the intelligence of the Poodle and the sweet disposition of a Cocker Spaniel. The Cockapoo is bred more because of its temperament rather than appearance. In general, they are intelligent, easy to please, friendly, happy, and outgoing. The Cockapoo can be an active dog or it can enjoy time as a couch potato along with its human family. The Cockapoo has a tendency to become very attached to its favorite person and wants to remain next to that person at all times; therefore, the favorite person is not likely to get much privacy from the Cockapoo who will follow you anywhere including the bathroom. Since this is a companion breed, the Cockapoo should never be left to live outside. Their intelligence and sweet dispositions also makes them ideal therapy dogs. 

The Cockapoo F2B is a friendly breed that can get along with just about anyone. With proper socialization, your Cockapoo F2B can get along with people of all ages, including young children and seniors. However, to ensure the safety of children and the dog, it is important that the child and dog are not left unsupervised. The Cockapoo F2B does better with older children because of their active and enthusiastic temperaments. As a friendly and moderately active dog, the Cockapoo would love to go on walks where it can socialize with the neighbors or new people. The Cockapoo loves to get attention from anyone, including strangers. With proper socialization and training, the Cockapoo can be trained to avoid becoming too friendly with strangers right away. The Cockapoo can get along with other pets including dogs and cats.

Socialization of your Cockapoo F2B should begin when it is a puppy (after vaccinations). Exposing your Cockapoo F2B to different people, sounds, experiences, and sights will ensure that your dog will grow up to be a well-adjusted adult dog. Proper socialization that begins in puppyhood, will ensure that your Cockapoo F2B will be comfortable in any new situation, and around new people and other animals in adulthood. It’s a good idea to expose your puppy Cockapoo F2B to various people and animals, allow your puppy to explore different environments, and become accustomed to various sounds, locations, and objects.  

As a people-oriented breed, the Cockapoo F2B tends to get along with everybody. They become very attached to their human family and prefer to be with the family at all times. They can suffer from separation anxiety if they are left alone for long periods of time. People with very busy schedules or who are away from home often may not be a good fit for this dog. Separation anxiety can lead to unwanted behaviors such as excessive barking or become destructive. Your Cockapoo will be happy with a family who can spend a lot of time with it at home or take it along with them whenever they leave the home. 

As an intelligent, eager-to-please breed, they are easily trained. They will respond best to positive reinforcement consisting of praise, treats, and affection. They can learn commands and tricks quickly provided they have a trainer who is consistent, patient, and supportive because they can be sensitive dogs. While they may be a bit distracted because of their Cocker Spaniel genes, the intelligence they inherit from the Poodle genes makes them generally easily trained with repetition and lots of rewards. 

The Cockapoo F2B does not have a high prey drive, so they are not likely to be interested in chasing squirrels or other small animals if they get off their leash. Also, they are not likely to run off if they somehow get off the leash. They are more likely to remain next to their owner because of the strong attachment they have with their human family.

The Cockapoo F2B is a very adaptable breed. With their “happy-go-lucky” personalities, they can be happy in any home environment especially if they get to spend most of their time with their family. They tend to be small dogs so that they can adapt to apartment living. Smaller Cockapoos can adjust better to apartment living than the larger Cockapoos. A larger Cockapoo, who is moderately active, would benefit from a larger home with a yard, but it’s not required. The most important thing to a Cockapoo F2B is being close to its human family. Provided they get the exercise and mental stimulation they require, they can adapt to any living environment. They are also not known for barking or howling excessively.

The Cockapoo F2B is more likely to be non-shedding and hypoallergenic than previous generations. Therefore, the coat will probably be curlier resembling the Poodle genetics rather than the Cocker Spaniel. With a curlier coat, the dog will need regular brushing. However, this generation is a good choice for people who suffer from allergies. 

The Cockapoo’s coat is usually long with wavy to curly which is more like the curly coat of the Poodle rather than the straight and wavy coat of the Cocker Spaniel. Your Cockapoo will require daily brushing to avoid matting. It is recommended to maintain the coat two to three inches in length. Be sure to trim the hair around the eyes to make sure its visibility is not compromised. It’s recommended that you take them to the groomer or trimmer their fur every three months. The coat is also odorless. Your Cockapoo F2B needs to be bathed one a month. 

The coat colors or color combinations consist of any of the colors and combinations you see in the Poodle and Cocker Spaniel breeds. Coat colors include red, apricot, blonde, white, black, and chocolate. They can also have multi-colored or patterned coats.

Because the Cockapoo F2B has floppy ears, it’s important to regularly check to ensure they are clean and free of debris to prevent irritation and infections. Its ears can be cleaned with a moistened cotton ball, but be careful that nothing is put into the ear canal which can cause damage. Indications that your Cockapoo F2B has an ear infection include a bad smell, redness, tenderness, or your dog could be frequently shaking its head or scratching the ears. It is also important to brush your Cockapoo’s teeth two or three times a week to avoid dental problems. Smaller dogs are prone to tartar build-up and gum infections which could lead to more serious dental and health problems. You should trim your Cockapoo F2B’s nails once or twice a month.

Cockapoos, regardless of generation, generally are moderately active dogs. Exercise should include a good walk and play sessions daily. While they are fairly active, they also enjoy lounging in the home with their family. They would be a good fit for an active family, but it is not required.. The Cockapoo F2B would love a brisk walk around the block, a short jog, or a game of fetch in the backyard. They are also athletic dogs so that they tend to do well in dog sports, such as agility and flyball. Cockapoos also tend to love to swim and would happily accompany their family to a pool, beach, or lake. They can be introduced to bodies of water as puppies so that they learn to be comfortable in the water. However, it’s important to never leave your Cockapoo unsupervised around water to ensure its safety. 

Because they are intelligent dogs, the Cockapoo F2B also requires mental stimulation. They can be entertained with interactive toys, chew toys, or games with their family.

It is recommended to feed your Cockapoo F2B one quarter to three quarters cup of high quality dry food divided into meals daily. The dog food should be appropriate for your dog’s activity level, size, and lifestage (puppy, adult, or senior). It’s better to get your Cockapoo F2B accustomed to two, scheduled feedings daily rather than leaving food out all day to eat throughout the day, which can lead to excessive weight gain.
