A Cockapoo is a mix between a Cocker Spaniel and Poodle. An F2 Cockapoo is a second generation Cockapoo by breeding two first generation Cockapoos together. The result is still 50% Poodle and 50% Cocker Spaniel. Cockapoos are frequently referred to as Spoodle or Cockerdoodle. Cockapoos generally stand at around 10 to 15 inches tall, weigh anywhere from six to 19 pounds, and have a life expectancy of 12 to 15 years. 

There are four different sizes of Cockapoo: the Teacup Toy, the Toy, the Miniature, and the Standard or Maxi. Each size corresponds to the size of the Poodle that the Cocker Spaniel is bred with. Each one is just as lovable as the next. 

Cockapoos are one of the oldest hybrid dog breeds that we know of and have only risen in popularity over the years. They were bred to be intelligent, kind, hypoallergenic, and great companions. They are certainly each of those things. Each one has a different personality, but you can expect a goofball that loves being around people and takes obedience training seriously. They can blend into just about any environment so they can be perfect for any family. Early socialization is important for all dogs for long term success. Make sure to introduce them to all sorts of things when they are puppies so they are comfortable experiencing new things when they get older. 

Grooming is an important thing with Cockapoos. Since they do not shed, you will need to brush them daily to remove dead hair and avoid mats or tangles. We recommend purchasing a slicker brush and a detangling brush. Other than brushing, do regular checks of their eyes, ears, and nose to clean out debris or notice signs of infection. They will not need to be bathed very often as they are pretty much odorless. Cockapoos are a moderately active breed, so they will equally enjoy their playtime as they will cuddled up on the couch with you.

Cockapoos F2 are likely one of the first designer dog breeds that quickly rose in popularity in the United States. We met the Cockapoo in the 1960’s and instantly fell in love. They are affectionate and love to be around the littlest of toddlers to the oldest grandparents. Cockapoos are typically bred from American Cocker Spaniels, but you can find them as descendents of English Cocker Spaniels. 

There is somewhat of a push among breeders to develop a breed standard for Cockapoos and breed them multi-generationally to eventually create a purebred Cockapoo. Other breeders are happy with first or second generation Cockapoos, so it will certainly be interesting to see where the breed heads in the next few decades. Historically, breeders have been much more concerned with personality than appearance, so there has not been a concrete standard for the breed in terms of head shape and size. However, there is a standard when it comes to personality – these are known as the friendliest dogs to exist. 

Cockapoos are extremely intuitive, which makes them excellent therapy dogs for people living with psychiatric disorders like PTSD, anxiety, or depression. Cockapoos are especially great service dogs for the elderly, as they brighten up any room and can be taught to complete all sorts of tasks. 

Cockapoo F2s are extremely affectionate and love being around people. They get their intelligence from their Poodle genes, which makes them easy to train. They are one of the happiest breeds of dogs we have ever seen and were bred to be excellent companions. To get the most out of your Cockapoo F2, we highly recommend early socialization to all sorts of sights, sounds, and smells, as this will make them even more loving and comfortable as they get older. 

Training comes quite naturally to Cockapoo F2. They are sensitive dogs and respond very well to positive reinforcement. Start training early on and with easy commands like their name, “come,” “sit,” and “stay.” Once they have mastered these commands, you can move onto more complex commands. They thrive in obedience training and are very smart, so you can get creative with the commands that you teach. Early training is important, and make sure to dissuade from any unwanted behaviors like biting, scratching, or barking as soon as you notice them. If you start noticing your Cockapoo getting distracted during training, take a break and come back later. It is a lot of work learning new things, so they need a break too. 

Potty training will also come naturally to your Cockapoo F2, but crate training can help. Dogs typically want to keep their environment clean so they will avoid going to the bathroom in their crate. When they alert you that they need to go outside to use the bathroom, reward them with positive reinforcement and a treat. They will quickly understand and not have any accidents inside. Crate training is also great for alleviating separation anxiety. 

Cockapoo F2 love people. They are happy to be around anyone in the family, including young children. However, do be sure to teach young children how to safely play with smaller dogs as they can get injured easier. Cockapoo F2 generally do well with other dogs or cats in the household. Smaller Cockapoos can do well in apartments, but larger ones will want a small yard to run around in, so would likely do better in a house. 

Cockapoo F2 are a breed that frequently suffers from separation anxiety, so try to not leave them alone for too long throughout the day. You can alleviate separation anxiety through crate training. These are the perfect dogs for large, active families or people who work from home. Cockapoos are not known to be particularly chatty, so you will not have to worry about disturbing your neighbors with loud barking. If they do see something that alarms them, they will let you know. Teach them the commands “no speak” or “quiet” to let them know you see the situation and there is nothing to be worried about. 

Cockapoo F2 do well in temperate climates but are generally not super tolerant of extreme temperatures. They can be prone to overexertion or overheating, so make sure to always take it easy in the summer months when exercising. They need regular access to fresh water and shade so they can cool off during playtime. If you are going on walks, try to find somewhere other than the asphalt to walk as it can get very hot in the summer months and burn their paw pads. Early morning walks before the heat has set in is always a great option. You also might need to invest in a light jacket for winter if it gets too cold where you live. 

Cockapoo F2 are hypoallergenic, which means you will not have to deal with much shedding or odor from them, but you will need to brush them daily. They produce low amounts of hair or dander, making them excellent choices for people with allergies. Their hair can grow quite long and is typically straight or wavy. 

Depending on their coat, most Cockapoos will need daily brushing. As they do not shed, their fur can become tangled or matted easily. We recommend using both a detangling brush and a slicker brush. Never brush dry fur. Instead, mist it with a detangling solution prior to brushing to avoid any irritation caused by the brush. 

We recommend bathing once every two months. Bathing too frequently can cause skin irritation, and these dogs are generally odorless. When bathing, use a high-quality dog shampoo and conditioner. Make sure to fully rinse out all of the product and dry them completely after their bath. Give them a thorough comb once they are dry and they will be as adorable as ever. 

You will likely want to get your Cockapoos haircut every three to six months. This makes grooming at home much easier. We recommend going to a professional groomer for haircuts, as they have the best tools and training to make the process as comfortable as possible for your pup. Regardless of full body grooms, you will want to trim the hair around their eyes regularly so they can see. 

Other than caring for your Cockapoos coat, you will want to brush their teeth at least a few times a week, if not daily. Dental disease is extremely common in pets, so staying ahead of it through regular brushing is important. If your Cockapoo does not tolerate teeth brushing, you can purchase some dental chews and treats to help break down plaque and tartar on the teeth. 

You will want to clip your Cockapoos nails around once a month or whenever you start to hear them clacking on hard surfaces. While doing your regular grooming, always check the ears, eyes, nose, mouth, and feet for signs of debris, irritation, or infection. By continuously checking, you can spot any health issues early on. 

Cockapoo F2 are a moderate energy breed and will need exercise to keep them happy and healthy. Try and give them a variety of exercise throughout the day with lots of playtime in the backyard or short walks around the neighborhood. To stay healthy, we recommend around 30 minutes to an hour of daily exercise. For puppies, we generally recommend around five minutes of exercise per month of age. It is important to not over exercise puppies, as this can damage their joints and bones while they are growing. 

Mental stimulation is going to be just as important as physical stimulation. Smart dogs can get bored easily, so we recommend investing in games for dogs like puzzles or treat dispensers to engage both their body and mind. You can also further obedience and agility training to engage their mind. Cockapoos have a great sense of smell, so you can teach them scent work for more mental stimulation.  

Cockapoo F2 also love to swim, so you can take them to the beach or lake during the summer to get some extra exercise in. They can get cold when wet, so make sure to dry them off after playtime is over. 

We recommend feeding your Cockapoo F2 a high-quality dry dog food designed for small breeds. Dry kibble is important because it helps promote healthy teeth and gums. There are a lot of different brands out there, so there are a few specific things to look out for when deciding which kibble is best for your Cockapoo F2. 

Look out for whole meats, fiber, vitamins and minerals, and fatty acids like Omega 3’s. Stay away from meat byproducts, fillers, and preservatives. Fruits and veggies provide lots of fiber and vitamins to promote shiny hair and a healthy gut. Fat and protein are crucial in a dog's diet, and a good rule of thumb is to have at least 8% fat in your dog's food and anywhere from 18% to 22% protein. 

The amount of calories that your Cockapoo F2 will need daily will depend on their age and activity level. Bloating and obesity is common in smaller breeds, so we recommend splitting their daily allowance of food into two or three separate meals, rather than one big meal all at once. Bloat is when dogs eat too much too quickly and can be life threatening. Feeding smaller meals throughout the day not only keeps them fuller for longer, but helps keep them healthy and the proper weight. 

If you decide to use treats throughout the training process or day to day, do so sparingly. Treats often are very high in calories, which can quickly lead to obesity. Always consult with your veterinarian when changing your Cockapoos diet or if you have any concerns.
