A Chipoo is a cross between a Chihuahua and a Toy or Teacup Poodle. A Chipoo F1B has a first generation Chipoo parent bred with a Poodle, making it 75% Poodle and 25% Chihuahua. They stand from five to 15 inches tall, weigh five to 20 pounds, and have a lifespan of 12 to 15 years. Chipoos typically have brown eyes, black noses, and fur that can be white, black, brown, silver, or cream. They can have shorter or longer coats that are typically wavy. 

Chipoos were one of the early mixed breeds that groomers tried out back in the early 1970’s. They are easy to love, intelligent, loyal to their families, and easily adaptable. Training is a breeze with Chipoos. They will want to spend as much time with you as possible, so they are great for people with active lifestyles. 

Chipoos are able to blend into any environment, making them perfect for single people and large families alike. When it comes to grooming these hypoallergenic dogs, you will want to give them a good brush a few times a week. Bathing only needs to happen every couple of months or whenever they get dirty. Always check their eyes, ears, teeth, and nails to be sure they are in tip top shape. 

Although Chipoos are energetic, they are not high maintenance when it comes to exercise. Their little bodies can wear out easily, so you do not need to spend all day outside with them. Their main form of exercise will likely be following you around the house. Be sure to feed your Chipoo a high-quality dry dog food designed for small breeds to keep them happy and healthy.

We first met the lovely Chipoo in the 1970’s, around the same time that we met the Cockapoo. Designer dog breeds became increasingly popular in the late 20th century, especially those bred with Poodles. Poodles have high intelligence and are hypoallergenic, so mixed breeds with a Poodle parent are highly sought after. By mixing a Toy or Teacup Poodle with a Chihuahua, breeders were able to create a small and adaptable dog that is a perfect companion for any family. Like most mixed breeds, the Chipoo is generally much healthier than its purebred parents. 

The Chipoo was designed to be low maintenance, independent, intelligent, and easy to train. These fun, playful companions can get along with just about anyone. 

Chipoos are very friendly and energetic, which makes them perfect little dogs for anyone with an active lifestyle. Although they are small, they are not necessarily lap dogs. They are much happier joining their owner on errands or doing chores around the house. We love Chipoos as a family pet because of their loyalty and ability to thrive in chaos. 

Chipoos are highly sensitive dogs, which means that they can easily pick up on your emotions. If you are sad, they want to make you feel better. If you are happy, they are happy. This also means that they thrive on positive reinforcement. When training, it is best to stay away from harsh tones or punishments, as this can break the bond between you and your Chipoo and cause them to be upset. 

Chipoos are intelligent and relatively easy to train, so this is a good breed for first time dog owners or those that have never trained a dog before. You will want to start your training regimen as soon as you bring them home. As with most dogs, you will want to start with basic commands like “come,” “stay,” and “sit.” Once they have mastered these commands, you will be able to move on to more complex commands. Chihuahuas are known to be talkative, so if your Chipoo inherits this trait, it could be useful to teach them the commands “quiet” and “no speak.” They likely want to alert you that they see something, so letting them know everything is safe is better than letting them bark. 

Potty training will likely be quite simple with your Chipoo, but we recommend crate training to aid in your efforts. Dogs typically do want to keep their environments clean, so they will not go to the bathroom in a crate. When they alert you that they need to go out, reward them with a treat and positive reinforcement and they will catch on quickly.  

The size of a Chipoo F1B makes them a very versatile breed. They can thrive in a small apartment or a big house, with or without a yard. Chipoos are a great option for first time dog owners. These dogs blend into just about any environment. They do not mind other dogs in the household, cats, or young children. However, it is important to note that Chipoos are very small dogs, especially those bred with Teacup Poodles, as they will likely be around five pounds. This means that they can get injured much easier than larger dogs. 

When introducing your Chipoo F1B to young children, make sure to supervise interactions and teach them how to play with your puppy carefully and safely. Same goes for other dogs or even cats. Make sure to introduce animals to each other slowly and carefully. Early socialization is important, but that does not mean that you cannot introduce a Chipoo puppy to an older dog. Take your time and do not rush it. 

Luckily, Chipoos generally do not suffer from separation anxiety in the same way some other small dog breeds do. Make sure to give them plenty of toys to play with to keep themselves entertained. Never leave them alone for too long, but you do not have to worry about them turning to destructive behaviors as a coping mechanism the second you leave the house. 

Chipoos do not do well in extreme temperatures. Although they tend to handle warmer weather better than colder weather, you should avoid spending extended amounts of time outside during the coldest or hottest months of the year. In warmer months, make sure that your Chipoo always has access to water and shade. If you are going on a walk, make sure there is somewhere for them to walk other than the asphalt, which can burn their paw pads. Get them a jacket for the winter for an extra layer of protection against the cold. 

This mixed breed has a medium length coat and is hypoallergenic, which is great news for those living with allergies. The main benefit of the F1B Chipoo over a first generation Chipoo is the hypoallergenic coat from that little bit of extra Poodle in them. 

Due to the fact that Chipoos are hypoallergenic, they will not shed. However, this means their fur is more likely to get tangled or matted. We recommend brushing your Chipoo anywhere from one to four times a week. There are certain times of the year where your Chipoo loses more hair, so during these times it will likely be closer to four times a week. Never brush dry hair, especially if it is tangled. Mist the fur with a detangler, leave-in conditioner, or water prior to brushing. We recommend using a metal comb and a slicker brush. The comb is helpful for dealing with tangles, and the slicker brush is great for reaching the undercoat and getting rid of dead hair. While you are brushing, check inside your Chipoos ears to make sure there is not any buildup or debris inside. This can lead to infections, so it is best to check daily. 

Your Chipoo will need a bath every couple of months. If you bathe them too frequently, you can strip the hair of natural oils and cause skin irritation. When you bathe your Chipoo, make sure to use a high-quality dog shampoo and conditioner. Rinse thoroughly and dry them off with a towel or hair dryer when finished. Give your Chipoo a brush afterwards to get them looking show ready. 

You might need to give your Chipoo a haircut a couple of times a year, especially Chipoos that were bred to have longer coats. You can do this yourself or go to a professional groomer to get this done. Getting your Chipoo used to the tools used in the grooming process at a young age is important. Some owners opt to cut their hair down short or to let it grow longer, but this is a personal preference. 

Besides looking after their coat, you will want to pay attention to a few other things when it comes to grooming. Chipoos tend to have watery eyes and these tears can make stains on the fir around the eyes. If you notice your Chipoos eyes watering, simply wipe them with a cloth or tissue to prevent staining and to make sure they can see. You will want to clip your Chipoos nails around once a month, or whenever you start to hear them clacking on hard surfaces. It is very important to brush your Chipoos teeth daily, starting from a young age. Dental disease is more common in small breeds, so getting rid of that tartar buildup is important or else it can lead to tooth loss or trouble eating. If your Chipoo does not allow you to brush their teeth, there are dental chews and treats that can help break down the tartar. 

Chipoos are energetic, but they luckily do not need to spend tons of time getting exercise throughout the day. They are always on the go inside of the house, so a couple of short walks or some fetch outside will satisfy their exercise needs. Due to their size, they will wear out easily, so try to avoid any strenuous exercise. Be extra careful during playtime while they are a puppy, as difficult exercise while growing can lead to bone and joint issues. 

Make sure to take them outside throughout the day for potty breaks. Their small bladder fills up quickly, and you do not want any accidents inside the house. We recommend anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes of exercise daily, but this can be split up throughout the day and includes time spent playing or running around indoors. 

We recommend feeding your Chipoo a high-quality dry dog food designed for small breeds. Chipoos can have some digestive issues, so feeding them high-quality food can prevent an upset stomach. 

There are a lot of different brands out there to choose from, but there are a couple of things to look out for. Make sure to get a food that has whole meats as the first ingredient, as well as plenty of fiber, vitamins and minerals, and fatty acids like Omega 3’s. Stay away from meat byproducts, fillers, and preservatives, as these can cause digestive problems. Fruits and veggies provide lots of fiber and vitamins to promote shiny hair and a healthy gut. Fat is crucial in a dog's diet, and a good rule of thumb is to have at least 8% fat in your dog's food. You will also want a food that has anywhere from 18% to 22% protein. 

You will want to split their daily allotment of food into multiple meals throughout the day rather than one large meal. Bloating and obesity is common in smaller breeds, so you will want to avoid those at all costs. Bloat occurs when dogs eat too much too quickly, and this can be life threatening. Feeding smaller meals throughout the day not only keeps them fuller for longer, but helps keep them healthy and the proper weight. 

If you decide to use treats throughout the training process or day to day, do so sparingly. Treats often are very high in calories, which can quickly lead to obesity. Always consult with your veterinarian when changing your Chipoos diet or if you have any concerns.
