Havanese are small dogs with big personalities. Sometimes referred to as the Havana Silk Dog, havanese dogs are about nine inches tall on average and weigh anywhere from seven to 13 pounds. Havanese are a soft, playful, affectionate, and intelligent breed. They have a life expectancy of up to 15 years, so they will be longtime companions.
Havanese are characterized by short legs and a fluffy tail that curls over the back. They come in a variety of colors.
The havanese are actually the only dog breed that is native to Cuba and is the national dog of the country. We can trace their lineage all the way back to the 16th century when Cuba was settled by the Spanish. By the 18th century, everyone wanted one, with Queen Victoria having two and Charles Dickens owning one.
Havanese make excellent therapy dogs in hospitals and nursing homes. They are sure to add a sense of calmness to your household.
Havanese make perfect family pets. They are great with children and other dogs. They are quiet dogs and typically do not bark much, if at all. Havanese are peaceful and gentle and a great addition to any household.
Havanese are smart and very trainable. These are a great choice for first time dog owners. They are also a great choice for cat owners, as they have very little aggression and will want to play with any cat. Havanese can be timid at first with new strangers, but will eventually warm up to just about anyone.
Havanese make an excellent family dog and can thrive in a house or an apartment. Their unique coat allows them to be tolerant of major heat. They suffer from separation anxiety, so shouldn’t be left alone for too long.
Havanese are prone to allergies such as fleas, grass, and pollen, so you’ll want to be prepared for that when you get one. Consult with a veterinarian first, but antihistamines (same as we use) can help in some cases.
Havanese have a long and silky coat which needs to be groomed daily to avoid any mats or tangling. Their eyes tend to water, so you’ll want to wipe them daily to avoid any staining of the hair around their eyes. Havanese are hypoallergenic, making them great for people who struggle with allergies.
Havanese need moderate exercise and enjoy going on walks or having some playtime, but make sure to not over exercise them. They are a low maintenance breed, and only need around 30 minutes to an hour of exercise per day. Havanese love to cuddle up with their owners, exemplifying what it means to be a lap dog.
Havanese puppies need even less exercise than adults and can get plenty of exercise from playtime around the house.
Havanese puppies need food that is specifically designed for small breeds. Holistic Select havanese puppy food is good because it is grain free, but high in Omega-3 fatty acids to keep their skin and coat soft.
For adult havanese dogs, Wellness Core is a good choice. It is also grain-free and has deboned turkey as its first ingredient. It is designed specifically for small breeds and helps prevent any obesity issues for your pup.
